Mount Marty College Brings Home Two Collegiate Archery North 3D Regional Championships
Callie Stevens Takes Aim at a 3D Target
On September 23, 2017 the Mount Marty Archery Team represented Lancer Nation this weekend at the US Collegiate North Regional 3D Championships held in Norfolk, NE. Callie Stevens (SO/Missoula, MT), sophomore, walked away with a first place win in the women's Olympic Recurve division while Jeff Wanner (FR/Henry, SD), freshman, brought home a first place win in the men's compound freestyle division. For both archers this was their first 3D tournament in the collegiate division. This tournament format has archers shooting 3D foam shaped animals.
In a tournament, archers shoot 20 foam shaped animals at unknown distances, usually proving to be the most challenging round where archers must estimate the distance of their target, followed by 20 foam shaped animals at known distances, changing the challenge where marksmanship rather than accurate distance measurement is the distinguishing element in your division. "I shot okay not great, unmarked yardages were rough but marked yardages were good. It was a fun day!" commented Jeff Wanner on his first collegiate 3D tournament at Mount Marty. "The unmarked distances were actually easier for me. I shot my best 3D score that round," remarked Callie who is an avid 3D shooter and skilled bowhunter from Montana. "I host a 3D tournament back home to fundraise for my local 4H archery team. I love being outdoors and getting to shoot my bow."
Callie will also be representing Mount Marty College at the US Collegiate Archery 3D National Championships hosted at the Sahara Woods Estate Fish and Wildlife are in Carrier Mills, IL. Over 300 archers from 23 college teams across the US will be in attendance.
